Digital firms urged to fight for extra cash

MERSEYSIDE video gaming and digital content firms are being urged to fight for funding to help them get more competitive.

Screen agency Northwest Vision and Media (NWVM) wants companies to bid for grants from the Regional Attraction Fund (RAF), which aims to back companies with strong growth strategies.

The fund is accepting bids until March, 2010, from companies either based in the North West or wanting to move here.

Enda Carey, NWVM's head of games and digital content, said: "We're incredibly excited to be able to offer support for the production of feature films, major broadcast projects and computer games, prototyping and production.

"RAF was originally established with the clear and precise aim of developing the independent television sector in the North West region., by providing financial support to both indigenous and incoming companies Just as the TV sector has expanded, however, so, too, have the region's other creative industries, which is why we now also offer RAF support to the region's film, games, interactive and digital content sectors."

"RAF funding has always been backed up by the highest quality advice and mentoring, and that's a legacy we certainly intend to continue into 2009/10.

He added: "Since January, 2006, we've assisted 87 small firms within the North West, enabling them to safeguard sales of £10.4m. That's a fantastic record, but with this fourth round of RAF investment we're hoping to add to that achievement."

The RAF offers grants of up to £50,000 for development of either infrastructure or content.

NWVM has also is also offering help to broadcasters hoping to sell their content abroad.

It teamed up with UK Trade and Investment to launch a mission to the MIPTV industry festival in Cannes next March and April where local production companies will be able to network with some of the world's leading media players.

A spokeswoman said: "In times of credit crunch, if the UK broadcaster is not willing to fully fund programmes, co- productions and export sales are more of a priority than ever before."

"With a squeeze on the profit margins attainable from UK commissions you have to make your content work harder."
