Poll: Is Twitter marketing a waste of money?

By Alistair Houghton on Jul 16, 09 02:05 PM

Controversy is brewing over NHS plans to spend £30m on social marketing in the North West - and LDP Creative has launched a survey to let you have your say.
The NHS has set aside the cash for a three-year programme to help raise awareness of public health issues from sexual health to the dangers of alcohol.

The NHS says the money is not just going to be used on sites such as Twitter but will be spent on a number of different projects to "influence behaviour".
Among the local firms that could benefit is ICE, as reported last week here on LDP Creative.
But, as reported here, it's been criticised by John Pugh, Liberal Democrat MP for Southport, pictured. He told the Daily Telegraph: "Blowing millions on marketing and Twitter is not how people want money spent."
The Taxpayers' Alliance joined the criticism, saying "We need to prioritise life-saving operations above frittering away money on this sort of PR."
The Daily Star, unsurprisingly, is even more strident about the "NHS twits".
On his Dale Street Blues blog, my Daily Post colleague Dave Bartlett says he agrees with John Pugh.
It strikes me that while this kind of spend is easy to criticise - and it sounds like an awful lot of money - it could pay for itself many times over if it can change people's behaviour and make sure they don't become a drain on NHS resources. Prevention is, after all, better than cure.

Would that be your colleague David Bartlett with the blog, Twitter account, RSS feed and Technorati link? Obviously doesn't see the value of social media!
