BLOG: Atkins diet needs better PR - I should know
Here's the latest blog from LDP Creative blogger Dougal Paver:
I DON'T doubt that if Dr Atkins were alive he'd be a most eloquent advocate for my choice of post-Christmas detox diet. And right now I need him.

Tell people you're on Atkins and the myth, hearsay, twaddle and unadulterated garbage they proffer by way of informed comment would be amusing were it not so depressing.
Sad to say, of course, that the responsibility for this lies with the Atkins company. Given the diet's undoubted health benefits it is beyond me that they have singularly failed to inform, educate and persuade a sceptical public.
They'll point to huge book sales and many lives changed for the better by way of a rebuttal, so maybe news of their good work just didn't register here in the north west.
According to pals and acquaintances the list of maladies I'm about to suffer include - in no particular order - imminent heart failure; cholesterol going off the scale; chronic constipation; and 'dog breath', whatever that is. I could go on.
All total baloney.
One of my many siblings did her PhD in cardiovascular science so she knows a thing or two about hearts and blood, not to mention peer-reviewed medical research (the only research worth a candle). When she studied Atkins for professional reasons she could not find a single peer-reviewed medical research paper anywhere in the world that disproved the Atkins thesis. Not one.
Yet the myths remain, as solid and immovable as my stools are alleged to become. I don't know who does their PR, but they've got a job on their hands. Either that, or they're singularly failing to articulate this most logical, proven and effective methods of long-term weight loss and control we've yet seen.
So back off and let me get on with the job of losing two and a half stone. I've got four 13,000 foot mountains to climb for Claire House Children's Hospice in July and I could do with a bit more support. Thank you.

The Atkins diet can and does work in reducing weight. So does smoking :-)
However, you ask for peer reviewed studies, and there aren't enough. What is well known is that ketosis can cause health risks.
Your sibling has a PhD in cardiovascular science. That does not make her a dietician, it makes her an expert on a certain area of cardiovascular science that she studied. You can't use that as an argument, I'm afraid.
It would do readers of this post good to read something like http://www.bupa.co.uk/health_information/html/health_news/300503diet.html which gives a balanced view on the current state of medical understanding of low carbohydrate diets.
Incidentally, I've lost twelve kilos, in six years (slow, but steady) by simply cutting down the junk and increasing the exercise. It's all too easy for keyboard warriors like and I to be sedentary and that's undoubtedly more dangerous than any diet!
Good luck with the 4 Peaks Challenge!
Uhm s /keyboard warriors like and I/keyboard warriors like you and me/
Momentary brain loss back there.
Hi Dougal
Best of luck with the diet and really go for it on the 4 peaks. Claire House is very pleased with all your and Paver Smiths efforts on our behalf
