New ã1m fund to help people win MediaCity work
CREATIVE industries support body Northwest Vision and Media (NWVM) has won ã1m in funding to help people win business at the ã500m MediaCity complex.
NWVM secured the funding from the Northwest Development Agency to continue its Digital Media Skills Programme for the next two years.
MediaCity, in Salford Quays, will open next year and will house five BBC departments currently based in London - Sport, Radio Five Live, Children's, Learning and parts of its Future Media and Technology team.
NWVM's training scheme aims to help firms win business from the BBC and other firms at MediaCity.
The skills programme aims to benefit new entrants who need help to develop skills, as well as freelancers who might not otherwise be able to afford training. It is hoped that around 1,200 people will have received training and support through the programme by March 2011.
Lynne McCadden, director of skills and new projects at NWVM, said: "At Vision and Media we believe in creating a world class digital and creative economy in England's North West.
"Among our staff are some of the industry's leading experts, who have daily contact with creative companies and individuals and are therefore best placed to identify the skills gaps and needs in the region.
"The Digital Media Skills Programme is critical to the continued success and growth of the digital media sector, in the face of rapidly changing technology and the shifting media landscape. Vision and Media will help create a workforce, which is equipped with the skills needed for the digital age and ready to make the most of the exciting opportunities ahead."
NWDA chief executive Steven Broomhead said: "The digital and creative sector is a priority sector for the North West and will be a key area in driving the region's growth as we start to come out of the recession.
"This programme will fill the digital skills gap and build on the previous programme, which has already improved the skills of over 800 people.
"We must continue to improve the skills in the digital field to ensure that North West companies and media professionals can get the skills at all levels to exploit opportunities of BBC North and MediaCityUK."
